Berkhamsted Tornadoes FC are set to celebrate their 50th anniversary after plans were halted twice due to the pandemic.

The town-based football club were initially due to celebrate their 50th season in Berkhamsted Sunday Football League Easter 2020 but due to postponements the club has now completed 52 seasons.

This is a significant milestone for the league, with the Tornadoes being the first included to reach 50 seasons.

On April 17, 2022, the team will be celebrating the anniversary at Broadwater, the home of Berkhamsted FC.

Phil Hobbs, secretary for the club, said everyone is looking for the celebration event this month with several old players to return.

He said: “Since the first league game on September 20, 1970, hundreds of local players have worn a Tornadoes shirt on a Sunday morning, and it’s hoped many will turn out for a reunion and a drink with some old teammates.

“We already have well over 100 involved with more to contact and it’s hoped that some we have not been able to contact will see this article.”

Phil continued to add the day will be a celebration of everyone who has contributed to the club over the years.

He said: “Tornadoes are the first club in the BSFL history to reach this 50-season milestone and we would like to celebrate it with as many people as possible. Our previous players, friends, referees, league officials etc are all welcome to attend and to make it a celebration of true grass roots football.

“There will be games between our current teams and teams of previous players from 2pm, adjourning to the bar afterwards where old photos, shirts etc will be on display to help bring back some old memories.”

Anyone is welcome to attend, and guests can pop in and out whenever is convenient.
