TOP TIPS: Northwood police give vital crime prevention advice

Published on: 11th August 2020   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Uncategorized

The Northwood Hills Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) has warned residents about three common pitfalls to be aware of.

The SNT gave out some crime prevention advice in a recent newsletter, focussing specifically on scammer gift cards, unproven COVID-19 cures/preventions, and bicycle thefts.

Regarding gift cards, they said: “More scammers are demanding payment with a gift card than ever before.

“Gift cards are for gifts, not for payments. If someone calls with urgent news or a convincing story and then pressures you to pay them by purchasing a gift card, and then giving them the codes on the back of the card – stop. It’s a scam.”

The SNT went on to say that while several drug trials are ongoing, there is currently no proof that hydroxychloroquine or any other drug can prevent or cure COVID-19, so misuse can cause serious side effects, illness and can even lead to death.

Finally, the SNT said: “It is imperative that you are securing your bicycle and making sure that the security measures you have put in place are visible so that it is less attractive to thieves who are on the lookout for ones that can be easily stolen.”
