A Croxley school pupil’s footballing talent has won him a prestigious place in Manchester City’s under-18s squad.

Luca Fletcher, 16, began his football journey while a student at independent school York House, which he attended from nursery all the way to Year 8.

Now, after having been scouted by England after his international debut in December 2022, he’s been signed to City as a scholar in their youth team, in the professional development stage of academy football. He had previously played at Reading FC since he was 12.

Playing  for the current Premier League champions will see Luca continue on a full-time programme, combined with full-time education in the coming academic year. He’ll also have the opportunity to play in the Academy League, the FA Youth Cup, the League Cup and the UEFA Youth Champions League, amongst other tournaments.

Luca said: “It is a dream come true and I am really excited to see what the future holds.”

Will Woodford, York House’s director of sport, said: “It was always clear that Luca had a bright sporting future as he shone in all sporting areas, but perhaps the earliest and clearly remarkable attribute was his extraordinary pace. He left other pupils standing in his slipstream and there were plenty of quick runners in his year at the time. Luca was regularly trained by Linford Christie, and I feel sure that his pace will be a strong feature in his bright footballing future.”
