TOP DOC: Chorleywood charity director recognised in New Year Honours List

A Chorleywood resident and director of a charity dedicated to fighting Parkinson’s disease has been recognised in the New Year Honours List 2024.

Dr Richard Wyse, who lives in the Loudwater estate, has been made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for services to medicine in Parkinson’s disease, based on the work he has done as director of clinical development for the charity Cure Parkinson’s.

When the organisation was founded in 2007, Dr Wyse became its second-ever employee, having previously worked in genetics and cardiology. At the time, research into the disease was in a bleak position.

Since then, Dr Wyse’s work has been instrumental in the charity’s international linked clinical trials, which have seen new potential treatments tested, another 21 trials still ongoing, and several others in the pipeline.

More than 4,700 people have taken part in the trials, where potentially disease-modifying treatments are assessed by a committee of the world’s leading experts in Parkinson’s disease, chaired by Dr Wyse himself. Three of these trials have recently reported positive results.

Helen Matthews, CEO of Cure Parkinson’s, said: “We are so delighted that Richard’s vision, hard work, creative thinking, scientific skill and sheer determination to find a cure have been so deservedly recognised.

“His contribution to the field of Parkinson’s research is completely unique and has inspired so many. Congratulations, Richard!”
