Residents across Chorleywood and The Chalfonts are celebrating after Buckinghamshire Council decided to not proceed with a controversial road closure.
In last month’s edition of Chorleywood News, it was reported that Chorleywood residents were left frustrated after discovering that Roughwood Lane, a crucial road that links the village to The Chalfonts, could be closed to traffic.
The consultation was launched by Buckinghamshire Council, suggesting that the road should be closed as it is “not able to cope with the volumes of traffic”.
Chorleywood residents were left frustrated after initially not being alerted about the proposal, as well as the environmental impact it would have as drivers would need to take longer routes to move between the villages.
However, on Wednesday, January 15, Buckinghamshire Council published its decision that the proposal would not go ahead.
Instead, Roughwood Lane will see improved signs for weight limits, a Traffic Regulation Order for motorised traffic except for permit holders, and permit eligibility for residents and businesses within a mile of the road.
The decision documents say: “Following a statutory consultation, the results show local people do not support the advertised proposal to close the road to motorised traffic.
“From the data and feedback from the consultation it is believed that a permit scheme to allow local people to continue to use the road while discriminating against strategic road network traffic will eliminate the problems.”
The consultation saw 51 votes of support, 31 comments, and a whopping 519 votes objecting to the proposal, a huge 86.4 per cent of the total responses.
Buckinghamshire Council has been contacted for comment.
