THE SEMICOLON PROJECT: Grieving St Albans mum channelling pain through upcoming charity event

Published on: 19th February 2020   |   By: News Desk   |   Category: Uncategorized

A mum is channelling the grief of her 44-year-old daughter’s death by running a tattooing event to raise money and awareness for two local charities.

Leanda Kelly’s daughter, Tanya Kordek, took her own life in December 2018, following a long battle with mental illness.

Mrs Kelly, who is from St Albans, is now taking comfort in knowing people will benefit from the project which has already received a fantastic response. Leanda has partnered up with tattooing shop Pure Colours, on Hatfield Road, to raise money for MIND in Mid Herts and St Albans Action for Homeless.

The Semicolon Project event will run over the weekend of March 28 and 29 at the tattooing shop and will see people pay £25 for a semi-colon tattoo.

£5 from the fee will cover the costs of the ink and the other £20 will be split between the two charities. Leanda is hoping to raise around £12,000.

Speaking to the magazine, Leanda, said: “The tattoo (;) represents a symbol of hope and can be powerful to those who need hope in a time of need.

“This project will hopefully raise a lot of money for both of the charities but the awareness we are trying to raise is equally important. People need to know there is help and support out there – which is what my daughter didn’t get.

“My daughter’s mental health started from when she was in her early teens and she struggled for ever. Watching over the years the lack of support and help was so frustrating.

“Today, every second I struggle. No parent should feel like I feel – it is hard, but it helps me knowing that someone will benefit from this project.”

Leanda is forever thankful to Pure Colours who have played an integral part in this project and have supported her since Tanya’s death.
