The introduction of Wenzels to the village has been described as the “last nail in the coffin” to a struggling family-run venture.
The Lunch Box in Kings Langley closed its doors on December 22, citing issues with the arrival of the bakery chain, as well as the changing landscape of the village post COVID-19.
Matt and Jane first started running the shop, which has stood sentry for 30 years, in January 2020.
Matt told Kings News: “It’s been a wild ride for us since the beginning. We used to have regulars daily who worked in the street’s offices, but now a lot of people work from home. Our regular client base took a huge hit with COVID, and we became reliant on passersby. The road is always busy, but the footfall of the village is not high, people don’t stop.
“Wenzels has been a huge issue for us. It was always going to cause us problems, we knew that, but we just didn’t realise just how bad it was going to make it.
“They were the final nail in the coffin, as it were.”
Announcing their closure on their social media channels, Matt and Jane thanked “everyone who has ever stepped foot in our little shop… we truly appreciate all of your support along the way”.
