ITN Productions has released a new documentary, sharing the story of a notorious British criminal who operated in and around Tring.
The Intruder: He’s Watching You From Within, released on April 8, is a new feature-length documentary about the police manhunt in 1984 for Malcolm Fairley.
Also known as ‘The Fox’, Fairley committed a series of burglaries and violent sexual crimes in the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire regions, which became known as ‘The Triangle of Terror’.
Fairley earned the nickname as he would build dens in the houses of his victims, before committing rape, indecent assault and violent assault on the occupants.
Two of his victims were a couple from Tring. Fairley broke into their property in June 1984, where he removed photos from albums, took clothes from drawers and stole various items.
Following an extensive investigation into more than 80 other crimes, he was subsequently arrested in September 1984 and given six life sentences.
Series producer and director Chris Hackett said: “This was one of the last big police manhunts before the introduction of DNA analysis. Officers were relying on old-fashioned detective work – boots on the ground, human intelligence, witnesses and fingerprints.
“We wanted to tell the story of the police officers desperate to find this man while also fearing for their own families.”
