A Chorleywood resident – and author of new book Mermicide – who suffers with severe borderline personality disorder (BPD) is thankful to her readers, as their support is the only thing that makes her feel happy.
Mina Rose launched Mermicide in June and has so far sold more than 200 copies.
The book is a dark fantasy LGBT+ novel set in a fictional volcanic nation called Illyria, in which man-eating mermaids are as common as rats. The main character, Piper, falls in love with one of these mermaids, which isn’t allowed.
Speaking to ChorleywoodNews, Mina said: “My BPD causes me a lot of suffering, so I struggle retaining joy. But there is one thing that always makes me happy and makes me feel life is worth living and it is when people read my work, love it and share it.
She continued: “I realised very quickly growing up there was a significant lack of LGBT+ content in media and literature and wanted to create something that fills the void.
“I also didn’t like how mermaids are usually portrayed – they have always seemed too “basic” and unrealistic to me, especially in movies and TV shows like H20 Just Add Water and The Little Mermaid. That’s why I made my own more realistic mermaids that aren’t so sweet and friendly.”
Mina has launched Mermicide on June 13 after working on it for four years.
