TEE PARTY: Residents fight back at proposed development on old golf centre site in Stanmore

Published on: 8th October 2020   |   By: Holly Bullen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Residents across Stanmore are outraged at a planning application which has proposed to build a banqueting centre on the site of a beloved golf centre.

The site on Brockley Hill used to be home to the Stanmore & Edgware Golf Centre before it permanently closed without warning last October.

Now the site is being offered up as a new home for banqueting company Premier Banqueting London Ltd, which will host a variety of events such as weddings.

This has sparked outrage amongst residents as it threatens their roads, green belt land and the peace and quiet of the neighbourhood.

The planning application submitted by Sairam (Holdings) Ltd proposes the demolition of the existing buildings at the golf centre, the construction of both a single and two storey building for a banqueting facility, and adaptations for increased vehicular access.

However, this application has been heavily opposed with hundreds of comments left on the Harrow Council website.

Pravin Patel, who used to work at the golf centre, is worried about the effect the development with have on the local area.

He said: “The golf centre meant a lot to the community and me. It has taken a big chunk out of Stanmore in terms of what to do for all people, young and old.

“I used to work and live there so have an emotional attachment to the centre.

“We do not need the development and we do not want it. You take something out of the area that has been there for that long and it changes the area.”

A group of residents, who wish to remain anonymous, also spoke to STANMORENEWS about their concerns and those of the 150 residents they represent.

They too shared a similar view to Pravin and have spoken out against the proposal, agreeing that the development will spoil the character of the area.

One resident said: “We feel very strongly that this development is going to harm the character of the site and the neighbourhood with the increase in traffic and noise pollution.

“It will totally destroy the character and the peace and quiet of the neighbourhood.”

The resident added that the development will create several parking problems for the surrounding neighbourhood.

They said: “The main issue they have is that there is very limited parking on the site as the developers have to comply with the previous footprint of the site.

“The worry is that what we will have is an overflow of cars from the site which will mean that our residential roads will be overflowing with cars.”

Another resident said she was worried about the impact of the loss of green belt land on the community, as several people use the area as a walking site or an escape to find peace and quiet.

She said: “To have a commercial centre in green belt land just does not seem right. We are really losing some of our heritage and it really is a strong objection from us.

“We do not want that commercial centre on our doorstep in Stanmore.”

Harrow Council declined to comment.

Premier Banqueting London Ltd have been contacted for comment.

A decision will be made on the application on December 1.
