The Kings Langley School Debating Society’s closed their successful month with another win in the Rotary Youth Speaks competition.

The team of George 10P, Izzy 10P and Harriet 10G presented a stirring and thought-provoking discussion on the topic ‘Is Britain Still Great?’.

With Harriet as the chair and host of the debate, George provided many intriguing and insightful points arguing for the motion, while Izzy shone in her speech where she argued against the motion.

As a result, the team won against Ashlyns School and are now through to the local finals in the new calendar year.

“I am immensely pleased with the team,” said Mr McGuigan, founder of the Debating Society. “The amount of time and effort these young people put into developing and harnessing what is such an important yet often overlooked life skill really showed today.

“Harriet was excellent in conducting the speakers, George and Izzy, both of whom have come on leaps and bounds in the time they have been attending the club.

“The pupils did an amazing job; I don’t honestly think I could have done at their age. To stand up in front of a crowd of people much older than yourself and talk so eloquently about big issues as they did makes me immensely proud of their efforts and how far they have come.

“My thanks to the local Rotary Club for organising this and letting the pupils’ talents shine through on the evening.”

The Debating Society is free to join and open to all year groups, they meet every Wednesday after school at 3.15pm till 4.15 in room F108.
