A St Albans driver crashed a BMW on the M1 in Bedfordshire, seriously injuring one of his friends.
Mizan Uddin, 30, of Hatfield Road, St Albans, reached a speed of 160mph on the motorway between Junctions 10 and 11 at around 3am on May 3, 2022.
After ignoring one passenger’s request to calm down, a tyre blew out and there was an explosion which detached the front of the car.
The vehicle spun out of control and collided with a Skoda minicab that was carrying two passengers, Luton Crown Court heard today.
Saroosh Khan, one of the passengers in the BMW, spent seven days in hospital suffering from internal bleeding.
The motorway was closed for 24 hours while the wreckage was cleared following the crash.
Uddin, a married mental health worker with a young son, appeared for sentence having pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Judge Michael Simon told Uddin footage showed him driving the car, which belonged to a friend, at reckless and dangerous speeds.
The judge said his driving was “mindless showing off.”
He went on: “Far too many people drive at excessive speed and the message must go out that the courts treat such driving seriously.”
Uddin was sentenced to 20 months in prison suspended for 18 months. He must complete 250 hours’ unpaid work. He was banned from driving for three years and must take a retest before he can regain a licence. In addition, he must pay £425 prosecution costs.
