A Croxley Green funeral directors is introducing a memory box for two local hospices, as part of a new initiative aimed to trigger long-term memory recognition for those living with dementia.
The memory boxes, which will be taken to Peace Hospice and Michael Sobell Hospice, will be filled with memorabilia.
The boxes are used to encourage people with dementia to engage with the memorabilia, prompting conversations about their lives and to reminisce about the past.
The concept was initially thought of by one of Co-op’s Funeral Directors in Scotland when he became mindful that many people within his local community were being affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s, which was leading to feelings of loneliness.
Jon Richards, funeral director at Co-op Funeralcare, said: “The memory boxes will give us the opportunity to support those living with dementia in our community.
“Not only do they help raise awareness of dementia, they’ll also help us to engage with people who wouldn’t usually communicate easily with others.
“We’re currently looking for donations from local residents to include in our memory boxes.
“Whether it’s an old shilling or a football programme from the 1900s, all donations are greatly appreciated.’’
