A Rickmansworth resident has raised more than £7,600 for a bereavement support charity through taking on this year’s London Marathon.
Katie Ahmed joined a record number of runners for the marathon on Sunday, April 27. She chose to raise funds for Sue Ryder in memory of her mum, Penny, who spent the last five weeks of her life at Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading. At the time of writing, she has raised £7,655.
Katie said: “Mum died in August 2017, but I think of her every day and often remember moments of kindness from the Sue Ryder staff at one of the most difficult times of our lives.”
Sue Ryder’s doctors, nurses and carers give people the compassion and expert care they need to help them live the best life they possibly can.
In an effort to raise as much money as possible, Katie wasted no time, sharing her story with friends and on social media, hosting a street collection, and selling cakes at work. She even raised nearly £200 from a sweet and cookie sale at Shepherd Primary School, which her daughters attend.
She added: “Getting the medal was a great feeling – as was taking off my socks and trainers!”
By the time the marathon took place, Katie had already entered the ballot for the marathon next year.
She said: “I am pleased to have ticked it off my bucket list but it takes a lot of toll on your body and certainly eats into family time. Given 1.1 million people also entered the ballot for 2026, I think I’m safe. I have been so grateful for everyone’s support and to raise nearly £8,000 for Sue Ryder has exceeded my expectations but I think it would be tricky to ask for sponsorship again anytime soon!
“I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated, it has meant so much and will make a real difference to Sue Ryder.”
Katie hopes her fundraiser will reach its £8,000 target. Head to www.shorturl.at/soVGb to donate.
