Garston-based running club the Watford Harriers are celebrating their centenary in January.
This month, Garston News has reflected on the club’s history ahead of their 100th birthday.
The club had their inaugural meeting under the chairmanship of the Reverend JHL Edwards at Watford Public Library on February 4, 1925.
Subscriptions were set at five shillings and six pence (27.5p) per annum with a one shilling (5p) nomination fee.
A second meeting was held at Les Wilson’s house five days later, with another meeting at the Public Library on February 11, when the club colours of a black vest with a 6” white band was agreed.
The first road run was from the George Hotel and took place on February 17. This was followed by a cross-country run from the bandstand in Cassiobury Park on February 21 with a total of 16 participants.
A ladies’ section of the club was set up in 1949.
The club have called the Woodside training ground in Garston home since 1955 when it was first opened by the Duke of Edinburgh.
Data from the British Milers Club 2020 found the Woodside track has had the highest number of fastest times recorded in the UK – a total of 44.
Notable alumni from the club include John Merriman, who came second in the 1958 Commonwealth Games six-mile race; Danielle Sandison, who came sixth in the marathon at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur; and more recently Tobi Ogunkanmi and Toby Makoyawo, who have both gained full international vests.
