A pair of local tennis coaches recently staged a 24-hour tennis marathon during which the players only put down their racquets for food and trips to the bathroom.
Coaches Jon Wildman and Mark Collett from non-profit club GetSet4Tennis played their first match at their Maple Cross site on Saturday, June 29, and didn’t stop until the same time on Sunday.
Over the course of the marathon, they played against 64 members of the club, while around 100 attendees came down to watch the charity extravaganza and enjoyed a bite to eat at the club’s Saturday barbecue and Sunday breakfast.
In total, the event raised more than £9,000 for GetSet4Tennis, an inclusive tennis club which offers free and low-cost lessons for children and adults.
GetSet4Tennis spokesperson Lisa Wildman explained: “For the last half an hour, they had players feeding them tennis balls so they didn’t have to move around so much. There were a lot of blisters and achy muscles going around!
“Every hour was different – one minute they’d be playing doubles matches against the seniors, then they’d be doing a bit of rallying with the younger players or those with disabilities.”
All funds raised will go towards covering basic running costs including rent, water and electricity at the club’s home on Denham Way.
