A mum from Ruislip is sharing her story after being treated for hearing loss.
Rebecca Willmont, 31, underwent surgery to replace fused bones in her ear with an implant, reversing damage caused by otosclerosis. This is a common type of hearing loss, which Rebecca developed whilst pregnant with her son Harry.
Having previously required patients to undergo general anaesthetic and stay in hospital overnight, modern medicine has transformed the operation to be minimally invasive.
Surgeons operate through the existing hole in the ear, and the operation can be carried out with minimal pain relief and recovery time.
Mr Bhav Patel, consultant ENT surgeon at Northwick Park Hospital, explained: “Doing the surgery with the patient awake is much better for their recovery, but also better for the hospital. For colleagues and myself, it means we can continue operating with beds freed up for those needing more urgent care.”
Rebecca said: “I’m often asked jokingly if I am sure I want to be able to hear my son at full volume at just two years old, but it is such a relief. Hearing him speak and knowing that I am better able to look out for his safety, it’s wonderful.
“Hearing loss wasn’t something I was expecting, especially not in my twenties; recently married, running my own business, and then a baby on the way. I am delighted that I am now able to hear again and very grateful to Mr Patel and the hospital team.”
