Smallford Station & Alban Way Heritage Society (SSAWHS) hosted a Heritage Open Day on Sunday, September 10.
SSAWHS has been researching and sharing the history of Smallford Station, as well as the Hatfield to St Albans Railway that it served for 10 years.
Over the past three years, they have organised a community project to improve the environment around Smallford Station in collaboration with St Albans City & District Council, and staff and students from Oaklands College.
To celebrate the end of the project, the society held its annual Heritage Open Day, which provided an opportunity to see the exciting improvements that have taken place. It also included an exhibition and guided walks, and raised more than £500 for SSAWHS.
Several guests attended, including Mayor of the City and District of St Albans councillor Anthony Rowlands, who said: “Neglected for many years, the station has been lovingly restored and is a fascinating reminder of this important former railway line.
“Congratulations to everyone who has worked so hard on this project.”
