SPRINTING TO SUCCESS: Chorleywood based charity celebrates first year of fundraising

Published on: 16th January 2021   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

Mission EmployAble’s first year of fundraising ended triumphantly on January 9 when keen runner Brent Mullane completed his last marathon for Chorleywood’s newest charity, dressed as Superman.

Chorleywood father of four, Brent, 46, was introduced by a friend early last year to the charity (which is raising money with the Cricket Club for a new pavilion and café on the Common) and from that moment on, he said he “just could not stop running for the cause.”

Brent competed in four 100-mile Ultras during 2020, often braving muddy terrain and cold weather, and then ran 14 consecutive marathons in as many days over the Christmas break.

When the Country to City (C2C) Ultra from Wendover to London was cancelled during lockdown on January 9, Brent was undaunted and instead, he ran the required 26.2 miles in and around Chorleywood, wearing a Superman outfit.

He was given moral support by his son Luke, 15, who joined him for the final 13 miles.

“Luke was my superhero sidekick,” said the proud dad.

In total, Brent has covered 771 miles and raised nearly £12,000 for Mission EmployAble’s café within the new cricket pavilion, which will train young adults with learning disabilities.

The café will be open seven days a week and will serve delicious homemade food to all comers, from cricket fans and ramblers, to families and dog walkers.

Erica Bendall, chair of the charity’s fundraising committee, said: “Brent is our very own local hero.

“Already, Mission EmployAble has raised more than £1.7m and we are so grateful to everyone who has supported us.

“With the community’s help, we will soon reach our target of £2m and I want to reassure people that their fundraising efforts needn’t be as energetic as Brent’s.”
