A teen from Croxley has set up a foundation to help athletes in training who may need some support.
Ellie Harber, who lives in the village, has won seven world champion fighting titles over the years and together with her family has set up the Harber Foundation to help young athletes follow their dreams.
Her mum Emma said that the foundation will provide a sponsorship to help someone maintain their training and follow their passion.
She said: “The foundation offers sponsorship for one person to train, as we recognise that through the pandemic and in general it can be quite hard to pay for fighting.
“The family has always been sporty and had a sporting heritage through Ellie’s grandad and her uncle as well who was Judo British champion.
“It is in part to give back and trying to honour these things, bringing them all together to mean something and that means a lot to Ellie.”
Ellie added that they came up with the idea over lockdown, during which she has been training with her the help of her family at home.
She said: “I have been training at home mostly with my dad and it is quite hard because when I’m not fighting I lose motivation and sometimes I’m really lazy.”
On top of training with her dad, Ellie has been running with her mum every weekend to prepare to fight for her first boxing title in March.
She said: “I’ve not actually had a boxing fight yet so this would be my first one and I’m a bit nervous.
“I’ve done sport boxing but it’s not really boxing it’s just an add on whereas proper boxing would be a good test.”
