Sport heroes launch new leisure facilities

Sporting legends John Barnes and Colin Jackson joined Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor to launch the official opening of the refurbished leisure centres in Watford and Garston.

The £1.8million project that saw Watford Borough Council in conjunction with Everyone Active refurbish two leisure centres in August 2018 has now finished. Customers are now able to enjoy larger gyms with state of the art equipment, a brand new toning suite and new virtual group cycling classes.

Ex-Watford, Liverpool and England player, Barnes, cut the ribbon at Watford Leisure Centre Woodside in Garston. He spent time coaching children to take penalties and answering questions before putting on a performance of his rap from the England football classic, World in Motion.

Barnes said: “The centre is fantastic. I was taught from my days at Watford with Graham Taylor to put back into the community by visiting schools, charities and leisure centres.

“It’s good to see the investment that has been made into this leisure centre which will serve the community because it’s able to afford the opportunity to work out in fantastic facilities. The gym is one of the biggest in the south east of England and the equipment is second to none.”

Olympic silver medallist, Jackson, cut the ribbon at Watford Leisure Centre Central before setting up ‘beat the Olympian’ gym challenges. He met with the community and tested his skills in a Bollywood dancing class.

Watford Borough Council has also invested in wheelchair weighing scales to increase the accessibility of the gym.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “It is fantastic that we have been able to work with Everyone Active to deliver these improvements. We’re committed to having first class facilities but also ones that are affordable and accessible to everyone in our town.”

Gary Foley, Everyone Active contract manager, said: “I want to thank everyone for coming along to the centres and hope that they enjoyed the new look facilities.”
