Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden CBE and Watford MP Dean Russell paid a special visit to Carpenders Park in Watford on Saturday, April 22.

The pair met with the Prime Minister’s wife Akshata Murthy to campaign in the local area, before stopping by local business Perk Cafe.

MyLocalNews spoke with the MPs to hear more about the upcoming local elections and Dowden’s new position.

In an exclusive interview, Mr Dowden said: “I’m honoured to be appointed as Rishi Sunak’s Deputy. I’ve been out today campaigning with his wife, Akshata Murthy, and Dean Russell, my good friend and neighbouring Member of Parliament. We face many challenges as a country, but I think under Rishi Sunak’s leadership, we’ve brought stability, the economy is starting to improve, we’ve set our clear priorities, and we’ve got a plan of action. I’m honoured to play my role in supporting him in delivering for the people of Hertsmere, the people of Watford and the wider country.”

Talking about the upcoming elections, Mr Russell said: “For the borough, there’s a really good argument that our local councillors are community champions, they really do care about the area. They agree with me that the height of the towers going up around Watford are too high or are going to be too high once they’re built. It’s about having people in the borough who can support me and work with me to make sure that voters’ voices are heard.

“For me, it’s very much getting out there on the doorstep. We’re hearing really positive stories about people still supporting the Conservatives, very much wanting to see what we’re doing nationally and locally, so making sure we’re delivering on the priorities with people. When we look in Watford – around tackling homelessness, making sure we’re standing up against planning decisions that are impacting local people, the work I’ve been doing about securing Watford General Hospital, also my work around the Tips Bill. All of those things, people are repeating back to us on the doorsteps. We listen, we don’t just tell people what they should think. We ask them what they think and then we deliver.”
