Community club Jimmy’s Jackets has celebrated one year of providing a “special place” for local residents.
Held at the Leavesden Green Community Hub in Garston, Watford Community Housing (WCH) has hosted the free lunch club since the winter of 2023. It was set up to help tackle social isolation by giving people somewhere to socialise and stay warm.
The project was only originally intended to last six weeks but due to its popularity, and having received funding from Watford Borough Council, it has been able to continue for over a year.
Karen Jago, WCH senior community hubs officer, said: “We are very proud to be able to bring the community together each week. It feels very rewarding and is something we all look forward to.”
One regular attendee said: “I am very fortunate to still have my husband, but many people here don’t and are coming here for that crucial bit of human interaction – it is a very special place for them.”
Another said: “I heard about it on the grapevine through my sister but now I feel part of the group too. Everyone was so welcoming!”
The club takes place every Wednesday. To find out more, email CommunityHubs@wcht.org.uk or call 0800 218 2247.
