SO CLOSE: point nicked from Northwood in stoppage time

Published on: 31st August 2019   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Northwood F.C

Northwood FC came agonisingly close to ending Tooting & Mitcham United’s 100 per cent record in The Isthmian League today (August 31), but ultimately lost out to a late goal

The Woods could’ve had a very early lead at Mitcham after winger Luke Holness poked the ball past the Tooting & Mitcham goalkeeper in the eighth minute, but it was ruled out for a high foot.

The Woods had to cope with significant pressure from the home side prior to their opening goal. ‘Keeper Rob Partington had to make a good reflex save from close range in the 11th minute, before further heroics saw him make a triple save in the 17th. He kept out a swerving long range effort before blocking twice from rebounds.

It wasn’t long after that United’s Coleman Degraft tested Partington again, this time with a low strike that looked to find its way into the bottom right-hand corner – but the ‘keeper showed his agility by pushing it wide.

Northwood’s resilience was rewarded in the 30th minute with a neat Alex Witham strike after some good work from Luke Holness. 0-1 Woods.

Holness had another go at the opposition goal from distance early in the second half but it was an easy save for Shah.

United made it 1-1 in the 62nd minute as Northwood’s defence switched off and allowed Danny Bassett enough space to slot one in.

The Woods held on well for the remainder of normal time and were close to earning a well-deserved point. However, Tooting & Mitcham stole all three in the 94th minute after Razzaq Coleman slipped past Imran Uche and smashed it in.
