SINKHOLE SHOCK: Watford woman hospitalised after falling into sewage-filled sinkhole

A Watford woman was hospitalised for several days after falling into a sinkhole in the road caused by a collapsed sewer.

Laura Gerber was returning from a night out when she stepped backwards into the inconspicuous sinkhole, which looked just like a puddle.

As well as injuring her back falling into the hole, Laura gasped to breathe and ended up swallowing some of the water, later contracting Leptospirosis, a disease generally caught from rat urine.

Laura is urging parents to be wary when allowing kids to jump into puddles if they cannot see the bottom of them, as the hole she fell into “looked just like a pothole with a puddle in it from the rain”.

Writing on Facebook, she said: “I’ve always used the saying about life flashing before your eyes but honestly, my life has never flashed before my eyes like this before.

“Please make sure you keep an eye when going splashing in puddles and make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

The section of road, the junction between Jubilee Road and Leavesden Road, has been closed since March 12, and is expected to remain closed until near the end of the month, according to One Network.

The repairs were expected to only take a couple of days, but the nature of the damage has caused the work to take far longer.

A Thames Water spokesperson said: “Due to the complexities of the repair, the work is taking longer than anticipated to complete.

“We have tankers attending every day to help keep our network running as it should while we continue the repair.”
