‘BEAMING SMILE’: Amersham child helped through community kindness

Published on: 3rd November 2024   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Local charity and residents rally around to support a looked after child in need, providing him with warm clothes and the items he needed to continue his dream of playing football.

Amersham resident Vicki Wheaton runs the Buckinghamshire-based charity ‘Domestic Abuse Survivors’, which provides mentoring services for looked after children aged 13-18 under Buckinghamshire care.

A recent appeal Vicki posted to Facebook, requesting items of clothing, was met with swathes of kind responses and an abundance of kind people offering gift cards, clothes and their support.

Thanks to residents, the young person received the clothes, with one resident gifting the young person the jacket from JD sports that he had seen but was so out of his reach.

Charity funding was also used to gift the boy the money for his football subs so that he can pursue his footballing passion.

Speaking to AmershamNews, Vicki said: “He was so happy. I hadn’t seen such a beaming smile for a while.

“It’s often assumed that domestic abuse is physical violence that happens between adults, but it is estimated that over 800,000 children are affected directly by domestic abuse in the UK.

“Domestic abuse is not isolated to a particular class or ethnic, cultural or religious group. I really want to raise awareness of how many children are suffering all around us at the hands of others when they should be loved, nurtured and cared for and then they can then lead a happy fulfilled life that takes them into adulthood full of happy memories.

“Where that has sadly not been the case, all I can try to do is try to make things better with those I Mentor.  All children deserve to be and feel safe within their home.”
