SING OUT: Phoenix Choir looking for new members

The reborn Watford Phoenix Choir held their first concert since their renewal last month- and now they’re looking for new members to join the team.

Originally known as the Watford Palace Community Choir, members kept together during the recent lockdowns via Zoom calls, held together by their Musical Director David Halstead.

The Christmas concert took place on Saturday, December 11, with carols, audience participation numbers and popular music playing well to a large crowd of concertgoers, one of whom was visiting Deputy Mayor Aga Dychton.

Of the concert, the Deputy Mayor said: “‘I enjoyed it very much and sang along behind my mask! I am very pleased that this community choir has been able to come together again and share their music with others in the Watford area.”

Reflecting on the performance, longstanding member Brian Baxter said: “‘It has been a challenge to set up the choir anew, but wonderful to be able to sing together again.

“It was very gratifying for us to have such an appreciative audience for our first concert, and it has spurred us on for further events in the community in 2022.

“It meant a lot to the choir members that the Deputy Mayor could be with us.”

The choir is now recruiting for its spring term, which will begin on January 19 at 7:30 in the evening at the Central Watford Primary School on Derby Road.

There are no auditions, and the choir is open to all abilities and ages.

To join, contact the choir at or just turn up to a rehearsal.
