SILVER SPORTS: Over-60s fitness and social club celebrates 17th anniversary

Published on: 25th October 2023   |   By: Annabel Stock   |   Category: Uncategorized

A fitness and social club is celebrating 17 years of keeping Chalfont St Giles fit, healthy and happy.

Chalfont St Giles 60+ Fitness & Social Club was set up 17 years ago by Karoline Lamb and held its very first session on October 24, 2006.

The club, which consists of more than 20 members, meets every Friday at the Scout Hall in the village. A fitness instructor leads an hour of vigorous exercise, followed by a chat over tea and coffee.

With members aged from 60 to 90, what makes the group so special is their active WhatsApp chat. Members never need go to the theatre, cinema or for a stroll on their own because the chat allows them to reach out and ask someone to join them.

Karoline, who has lived in the village for 60 years, was formerly a councillor. While she began the group with a small fund from the council, they are now entirely self-funded.

The group is open to people of all abilities, and everyone is able to work at their own pace. Karoline believes that movement is crucial for the wellbeing of those aged over 60.

She said: “The older you get, the more you have to do, or you deteriorate. The group is an amazing source of community and companionship and we have been keeping the village healthier.”

The group celebrated their anniversary on October 24 with a meal out and a specially made cake.
