Rickmansworth & Watford Sea Cadets attended the VE80 Memorial Service at Westminster Abbey on Thursday, May 8.
The anniversary celebrates the formal acceptance of Germany’s surrender on May 8, 1945, and the formal end of the Second World War in Europe.
The Sea Cadets had the opportunity to show their gratitude to the wartime generation in front of members of the royal family, senior politicians, and veterans. They played a central role in the event, escorting the procession of Second World War artefacts.
Priyan Patel, chair of the unit trustees, said that the opportunity was granted to the unit in recognition of its recent accolade, the Stevenson Trophy – awarded to the Best Unit in the London area.
He said: “Being invited to attend the memorial marked a significant token of congratulations to all our volunteers and cadets. Their energy, commitment, and enthusiasm are what make our unit thrive, so it is a pleasure to receive wider recognition.”
