SENTENCED: Watford man jailed for coercive and controlling behaviour

Published on: 20th October 2023   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Watford man who routinely assaulted his partner when she disagreed with him or didn’t meet his standards, has been sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment for coercive and controlling behaviour.

Aimen Mawia, aged 29, from London Road, in Watford, pleaded guilty to coercive and controlling behaviour between July 1, 2022 and February, 12  2023.  He also admitted possession of a controlled Class B drug (cannabis) and obstruction of a police officer.

Mawia, who appeared at St Albans Crown Court on Tuesday, October 10, was given 31 months imprisonment for coercive and controlling behaviour.  He was sentenced to a week’s imprisonment, to run concurrently, for possession of cannabis and two months’ imprisonment for obstruction of a police officer.

The court made a restraining order to protect the victim. If he breaches this on his release, he will be sent back to prison.

Detective Constable Conor Day from the Domestic Abuse Investigation and Safeguarding Unit said: “His victim was terrified of Mawia and feared for her life. She was brave enough to disclose what had happened months after the incidents occurred so we were able to work with her to move her to a place of safety.”

If you are experiencing domestic abuse, call 0300 790 6772 for advice and support during week day office hours. In an emergency, call 999.  If you are not able to speak, call 999 from a mobile and press 5 and 5.  Help and support is also available from the Sunflower Centre at hertssunflower.org
