SAFER COMMUNITIES: Garston-based charity launches initiative to address concerns over burglary

Published on: 26th July 2025   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Garston-based charity is helping to address increasing concerns that South Asian families are being disproportionately targeted for burglary.

One Vision, a community-led charity tackling inequality and social cohesion, has partnered with Hertfordshire Constabulary and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner to launch the Safer Communities Initiative – Empowering South Asian Households.

The initiative is led by Enoch Kanagaraj BEM, founder and CEO of One Vision, in partnership with Three Rivers Chief Inspector Kio Bozorgi, Watford Chief Inspector Andy Wiseman, and Police and Crime Commissioner Jonathan Ash-Edwards. It will aim to build community trust, deliver targeted safety education, and strengthen collaboration between policing teams and ethnic minority communities.

Studies and local data have shown that South Asian households are more likely to experience targeted break-ins, often due to visible jewellery, cultural event routines, and a lack of tailored crime prevention outreach. Language barriers, cultural sensitivities, and underreporting further compound the issue, leaving many victims feeling isolated and vulnerable.

Running until August 2025, the Safer Communities Initiative includes multilingual burglary prevention workshops, community safety ambassador training, youth leadership programmes, women’s safety forums, and home security assessments.

Mr Ash-Edwards said: “The Safer Communities Initiative aligns strongly with our priority to prevent crime and antisocial behaviour. I’m proud to support a project that tackles real-world issues in a thoughtful, inclusive and impactful way.”
