SAD DAY: Campaign group’s appeal against Radlett freight plan is derailed by High Court judge

Fight the Freight have lost their most recent legal case fighting to save the former Radlett airfield, potentially marking the final nail in the coffin for the campaign group.

Following various court appearances spanning multiple years, the group announced on Monday, October 7, that a High Court judge has rejected further legal challenge.

Earlier this year, an appeal was lodged to counter a High Court decision that said that the sale of the land was lawful.

The group say that the land previously owned by Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) was protected under green belt status and should stay publicly owned.

The team have been tirelessly campaigning against the 400-acre development that will house five warehouses for a rail freight logistics park, an issue which the group states will affect everyone living, working and going to schools in St Albans.

Speaking to St Albans News, councillors Terrie Smith and Nuala Webb, who have been key to the Fight the Freight campaign, said: “I’m disappointed that the law, as it stands, doesn’t seem designed to help the public, especially those who rely on donations and that HCC has not been held accountable for the failure to protect our land.

“However, I will support the team set up by Fight the Freight to monitor and control the development, with the hope that their efforts will ensure the project stays within the rules and meets all the planning stipulations.”

Another spokesperson for the group said: “It’s truly a sad day for St Albans and surrounds.”
