On February 26, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia visited Michael Sobell Hospice patients, staff and volunteers to honour the recent reopening of the inpatient unit.

Princess Katherine took a tour of the newly-refurbished unit and was invited to view the new stained glass window which had been designed and created by local man and son of Dr Elaine Laycock, Stuart Laycock, who also originally designed the very first hospice logo in 1980.

Dr Elaine Laycock, who worked at Michaell Sobell Hospice from 1980 to 1992, has visited Serbia numerous times, and she commented: “It is an absolute privilege and pleasure to know Princess Katherine and to welcome her once again to Michael Sobell Hospice.

“I know she has done an amazing amount of humanitarian work for many years, and that she has had a special interest in Michael Sobell since it helped to get palliative care started in her country, Serbia. I also know she rejoices with us that we are now fully open.”

She added: “I am delighted that Princess Katherine has found time in her very busy and short visit to England of just three days, to come and see us, and I know she is looking forward to meeting Gaie Scouller, grand-daughter of Sir Michael who made the generous donation to create the hospice in 1977.”
