ROAD PROTEST: Traffic builds on M25 as Just Stop Oil members climb gantries

Published on: 7th November 2022   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

Traffic on the M25 has been brought to a near standstill after Just Stop Oil activists staged a protest on the motorway.

Protestors attempted to climb gantries near London Colney and South Mimms, with several of them being arrested by police.

Herts Police posted on Twitter: “We are currently responding to reports of people attempting to climb overhead gantries on the M25, at both junction 22 (London Colney) and junction 23 (South Mimms). Officers intercepted a group of protestors at junction 22, and several people were arrested.

“We remain at the scene, alongside specially trained Protest Removal Team officers, and a road closure has been put in place to allow them to deal with the incident as swiftly and safely as possible.

“Please avoid the area and seek an alternate route where possible.”

As a result of the protest, Hertfordshire Highways are reporting major delays on the M25 around the Watford area.

A similar protest is taking place on Junctions 8 and 9 in Surrey.

A spokesperson for Just Stop Oil said: “Yesterday evening, Just Stop Oil contacted the Metropolitan Police and National Highways Ltd to advise them that there would major disruption on the M25, and ask them to implement a 30mph speed limit, in line with their responsibilities to keep the public safe.”
