A young Abbots Langley gymnast who moved to the area under the Homes for Ukraine scheme has won in an international competition.

As previously reported, Vladislava ‘Vlada’ Cherkas, 10, travelled to Poland in December to compete in the Aurora 2022 Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship.

Vlada has always excelled in rhythmic gymnastics, having first started learning the discipline at the age of five, and loves nothing more than competing at the top level.

At the competition hosted in Katowice, Poland, Vlada competed against more than 20 of the top girls from Ukraine, Austria, the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Poland.

She was named the winner of the floor competition for girls born in 2012.

Tim Hives, who has hosted the Cherkas family in his Abbots home, said: “Vlada was very happy to compete. She was nervous as she hadn’t been able to train properly, but it all turned out well.

“The family are so delighted that she is back doing what she loves. Her relatives, particularly her father who is in Kharkiv, were very proud of her.”
