‘RIDICULOUS LIMIT’: Meeting held with MP as Kings Langley residents share concerns over parking

Locals have issued a warning that the new parking charges in Kings Langley are “killing the High Street”.

Previously, parking was free for one hour, until new parking charges officially came into force on Monday, March 31. This is despite hundreds of people signing a petition against the introduction of paid parking.

Business owners and residents organised a meeting to share their concerns with Gagan Mohindra, MP for South West Hertfordshire, on Tuesday, April 15.

At the packed meeting, the empty parking bays and half-empty car parks were noted as local residents and visitors are worried about getting a parking ticket unless they are continuously clock watching.

The MP offered his full support to the traders, confirming he would be writing to the Leader of the council to reiterate the messages he had heard.

The changes have also had a “huge impact” on Kings Langley Surgery, as GPs who use The Nap car park now have to keep moving their vehicles during their shifts.

The surgery itself has a team of 45 staff but only 14 spaces on site.

Councillor Alan Johnson, who attended the meeting, told KINGSnews: “The ridiculous limit of no more than one hour in the centre of the village is ludicrous.

“Instead of listening to local residents, retailers or elected councillors, the borough council has simply pressed ahead with a ‘we know best’ approach.

“No one is suggesting there should be no charges, but restricting the maximum paid stay in the High Street to one hour is killing the footfall we’d normally have seen seven days a week.”

Sue Kinchin, Kings Langley Surgery’s manager, said: “Please be aware of the parking restrictions at The Nap car park and the impact it is having on our team. We apologise for any disruption to services as we juggle parking – crazy.”

A Dacorum Borough Council spokesperson said: “This change will enable higher vehicle churn, freeing up bays for patients visiting Kings Langley surgery or visitors to the local area.

“Unrestricted parking will remain in Kings Langley in nearby roads, should longer than four-hour parking be required.”
