A Rickmansworth man has been given a suspended prison sentence after being found travelling through the town in a van with a large amount of cannabis on board.

Matthew Gambula, 33 was travelling as a passenger in a van on Money Hill Road where officers uncovered between £17,500 and £18,000 worth of drugs on February 13, 2019.

Gambula, of The Queens Drive, Mill End, tried to run from the vehicle but was quickly caught by an officer. However, during a brief struggle, there was some concern after Gambula briefly got his hand on the officer’s firearm.

At St Albans Crown Court on November 1, 2021 he admitted possessing cannabis with intent and possessing MDMA tablets with intent.

Mr Mahesh Karu, defending, said since the defendant’s arrest in 2019 he had stopped taking drugs and moved away from the people he was then mixing with.

Judge Richard Foster told Gambula that he was pleased that in the time since his arrest he appeared to have “sorted” himself out and was no longer taking drugs and was a well-regarded employee.

He sentenced him to two years imprisonment which was suspended for two years and ordered him to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work. He was told he would have to pay £200 towards the cost of the prosecution.
