Yvonne Wells, the leader of the 1st Rickmansworth Rainbows, was nominated to attend a red carpet event for her contributions to Girlguiding.
A delighted Yvonne attended the Girlguiding Celebrates event in London on Saturday, November 25, along with her 17-year-old daughter and fellow Girlguide Jessica.
Yvonne said: “We were greeted with a glass of bubbly and an afternoon tea reception of finger sandwiches, cakes and scones – whilst meeting leaders/volunteers from all corners of the country and from all walks of life.
“We were able to walk the red carpet like celebrities.
“A couple of times whilst we waited for our turn, some members of the public asked what was premiering and if anyone famous had arrived. I replied, ‘Yes, it’s us, and we’re celebrating all things Girlguiding’.”
Explaining how she got involved with Girlguides, Yvonne said: “I started volunteering as a unit helper when my daughter Jessica joined Rainbows aged five because I got bored walking around Ricky whilst waiting for her to finish. One week, the leader asked for volunteers as she was short of an extra adult, and I never looked back.”
Yvonne was nominated for the ceremony by a Rainbow parent who was impressed by Yvonne’s work with the 1st and 4th Rickmansworth Rainbows.
The parent said: “Yvonne has been my three daughters’ Rainbows and Brownies leader over the past 10 years.
“I have never seen such a humble, selfless, committed leader. She truly is an unsung hero in that she gives her heart and soul to ensure these young children have memories to last a lifetime.”
