MP and Watford Workshop welcome increased funding for disabled people

Published on: 31st August 2018   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Uncategorized

In July, The Department for Work and Pensions announced increased funding to support businesses that provide extra employment support for disabled people with the greatest barriers to work.

When the Work Choice employment programme ends in March 2019, ongoing support will be offered to individuals working in supported businesses, like Watford Workshop, through specially designed new elements of the government’s Access to Work scheme.

Earlier this year, Watford MP, Richard Harrington MP, invited Disabilities’ Minister Sarah Newton MP to visit Watford Workshop, and meet with Chief Executive, Linda McIntyre, to discuss the end of Work Choice. Since then, Linda has been working closely with the Department for Work and Pensions on the Access to Work Programme, and is delighted by the announcement.

Linda McIntyre, Chief Executive of Watford Workshop, said:

“I am so thrilled by this announcement, it clearly shows the government’s commitment to supporting disabled people in work and opening up opportunities for more disabled people to gain employment.”

For two years from April 2019, Watford Workshop will receive increased funding of £5,000 a year from Access to Work for each individual in a Work Choice Protected Place.

Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work Sarah Newton said: “We’re committed to ensuring that disabled people are able to thrive in the workplace, and supported businesses like Watford Workshop play a big part in helping thousands to reach their full potential.

“Access to Work already provides tailored, personalised support to people up and down the country and this announcement will ensure that many more will benefit in the years to come.”

Richard Harrington, MP for Watford:

“I’m delighted that the Government is providing more funding for places like Watford Workshop, following the Minister’s visit earlier this year.

This announcement means that more payments will not only be available for existing employees but also for the charity to employ more disabled people, enabling even more people in Watford to access support.”
