Pupils at Rickmansworth School enjoyed a visit from a former student who witnessed the school’s opening 70 years ago.
Gill Harding attended the school herself, and her grandchildren are now currently enrolled.
In a talk delivered to pupils, Gill recalled taking classes in history, Latin, French and art, as well as receiving plenty of homework which would often be returned to her with a plentiful lashing of red pen.
According to Year 12 student Kat Bowman, Gill recalled that many of the teachers were young and some had come straight from university. Gill’s own form master, Mr Withers, wore his academic gown every day.
Many of the facilities enjoyed by present-day pupils were added to the school premises long after Gill graduated.
At the time, the school had two bridge clubs, though the once popular board game has since fallen out of fashion amongst young people.
Gill cherishes her memories of Rickmansworth School to this day, including the excellent puddings served in the lunch hall and days spent in the school library.
