A long-standing member of Hertsmere Borough Council (HBC) passed away on Sunday, June 8.
Councillor Rabbi Alan Plancey MBE had been a borough councillor for the Borehamwood Brookmeadow Ward since 2015, and was a Borehamwood county councillor from 2009 to 2021. He also twice served as the Mayor of Hertsmere.
Outside of his work as a councillor, cllr Plancey was a minister at Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue, was appointed Emeritus Rabbi in 2008, and was chaplain to both the police and to Luton Airport.
Councillor Jeremy Newmark, Leader of HBC, said: “Cllr Plancey was a deeply committed public servant. His loss will be felt by many in the community. My thoughts are with his loved ones.”
On his retirement from the county council, cllr Plancey was made an Honorary Alderman of the county, and he was awarded an MBE in 2023.
Chabad Borehamwood & Elstree shared on social media: “A true loss for our community. Rabbi Plancey built this community from the ground to where it is today.”
Reverend Sarah, of St Martin’s Church in Shenley, wrote: “He made a huge impact on this community and his legacy will live on through all who encountered him.”
Harvey Cohen, chair of Hertsmere Conservative Association, said: “Alan was a pillar of respect, guidance and calm counsel to all his colleagues. His voice, his values, and his unwavering commitment to Hertsmere will be profoundly missed.”
