A Northwood grandmother has defied the odds to complete a fundraiser for a cancer charity.
Sue Johns, 67 (pictured), was left bed-bound after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. It wasn’t until her third visit to A&E that she was admitted and told she had cancer.
Sue explained: “It came completely out of the blue, especially as 15 years ago I had a total hysterectomy. I didn’t know that I could get ovarian cancer without ovaries, but research shows that there is still a chance. From that moment, I went seriously downhill.
“My children thought they were watching me die. However, if you see me now, you will see how far I have come.
“I may not be 100 per cent back to myself, but things are improving, and I’m living my normal life.”
On Sunday, October 19, Sue laced up her trainers for Ovar-Dressed London, a fundraising event organised by Target Ovarian Cancer in Regent’s Park.
NORTHWOOD&RUISLIPnews caught up with Sue after the event to hear how it went.
She said: “It was great to see so many inspirational people come together to raise money for such a good cause.
“The Rock Choir got us all in a good mood, and the speeches were very moving. Everyone was very friendly and supportive of each other.
“It was quite an emotional day for me for many reasons and I managed to raise an incredible £1,335.”
Speaking to NORTHWOOD&RUISLIPnews before the event, head of community and events at Target Ovarian Cancer Becky Wilson said: “This is more than a charity challenge; it’s a chance for people like Sue to share their experience of ovarian cancer.
“For them to celebrate their own achievements and at the same time raise awareness of a disease which devastates too many lives.”
Money raised from Ovar-Dressed London will go towards improvements in research, early diagnosis of ovarian cancer and awareness of the disease, alongside providing support for those affected.
