Students in northwest London studying GCSE and A level science subjects were invited to attend a radiation services open day at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre on Wednesday, 21 September.

This was a unique opportunity for Northwood College for Girls pupils to access the centre’s departments which use ionising radiation.

These are normally closed to the those under 18 years of age. Students were given a tour of the centre and learned about the science and technology behind diagnosis and treatment at a specialist cancer centre.

Students were given the chance to speak to staff to gain an insight into careers in specialist fields such as medical physicists, healthcare science practitioners, radiographers and technicians.

Jagdeep Kudhail, head of radiation services at the centre said: “We were delighted to invite local science students to this special event to help them understand the science behind our treatment services.

Rosemary Thompson, head of careers and UCAS at Northwood College for Girls said: “Thank you so much to Mount Vernon Cancer Centre for inviting our students to the radiation services open day.

“It was great for our students to meet the professionals on site, an opportunity that has been denied them over the past few years, and they came away full of praise and enthusiasm for what they had seen and learned.

A student attending the event said: “As someone interested in medicine this was a very eye-opening event as I personally never considered all the work that happens behind the scenes or the all the other roles that work alongside doctors and consultants.”
