An award-winning filmmaker from Pinner has released his first children’s book, encouraging children to recycle and teaching them about the effects of hoarding.
Pinnernews spoke to Radio Harrow volunteer Andrew Hamblin back in January after his short film, Lovestruck, received several awards at the Accolade Global Film Competition.
Now, Andrew has begun a new venture and published his debut children’s book, Rosy and the Bin Beast, on Friday, July 19. The story follows Rosy, a creative girl who loves to collect all sorts of things from the outside world. But after storing too much around the house, she comes face to face with Melvin the bin beast, a quirky creature who likes to cause mischief.
Andrew said: “I saw bins full of rubbish and got inspired, thinking about a character collecting the discarded items and the idea of a bin beast moving into the house.
“So I started writing it like a short film with a beginning, a middle and an end. I went through a few drafts and sent it over to a couple of friends for feedback, before getting to the final draft.”
Andrew explained that the book ended up being a local collaboration, after discovering that illustrator Alexander C Watts had studied in Harrow.
Andrew continued: “It feels great to see the book out; it’s definitely quite surreal. I wasn’t sure this would ever happen, but I thought I had to get this out there.
“I hope it will be a series. I have lots of other ideas, so we will have to see how it all works out…”
