Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) has reportedly agreed to unblock drains on Abbots Langley High Street.
Having originally been told the drains would not be looked at for seven months, Liberal Democrat councillor and Leader of Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) Stephen Giles-Medhurst sent the council photos of the blocked drains. Following this, HCC will reportedly now treat it as a priority job.
Cllr Giles-Medhurst said: “HCC has agreed they must be unblocked and checked and raised this as high priority job.”
The news came as Three Rivers Conservatives claimed that TRDC sent notices to Abbots Langley residents asking them to repair drains taking water from Causeway car park to a nearby soakaway.
The Tories claim that the council’s letter said TRDC would use the Public Health Act to take enforcement action against residents if the repairs were not carried out.
Abbots Langley and Bedmond councillor Vicky Edwards said: “I think it is wrong that the council has threatened to use its public health powers to force residents to fix a drain they do not use.”
TRDC said homeowners who live above the drains are responsible for large sections of the drains, but Croudace Homes Ltd are also responsible for a small section beneath a footpath.
Cllr Giles-Medhurst said: “Cllr Edwards disagrees with the council’s legal view. The drains in the council’s ownership are not blocked.
“Unfortunately, the blockages are in the sections that are privately owned.”
HCC has been contacted for comment.
