Harrow Council has announced a new approach to tackling fly tipping in the borough, by creating a wall of shame and witness boards online and in fly tipping hotspots.
A statement released by the council says: “It’s disgusting, it’s criminal and we hate seeing it happening in our borough.
“We’re taking a new approach to fight back on filthy fly tippers who show no pride in their communities.”
In the last year (2023/24), 1,147 fines were issued to those caught fly tipping in Harrow.
In the first monthly round-up of fly tippers, unidentified people were caught dumping waste in areas across the borough, including Pinner Road, Constable Gardens and Park Way.
Councillor Pritesh Patel, cabinet member for cleaner streets and public safety, said: “Like our residents, we are fed up with seeing fly tipping happen on our streets. There are no excuses for it. These people show no respect for our borough, and we are determined to find them and fine them.
“We’ve already increased fines which now start at £1,000, and our officers are checking all reported fly tips. Our CCTV cameras are now also catching fly tippers in action. Where there’s evidence, we will take action including taking these people to court.
“Our wall of shame asks for your help in identifying those individuals where we have been unable to
do so.”
The new scheme comes as Harrow Council announced that £270,000 has been invested into street cleansing and the expansion of its enforcement team, which it says will “bring pride back” into the local community.
