PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: Free exhibition to celebrate Watford as a ‘place without prejudice’

Published on: 16th January 2025   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

On Saturday, January 25, Proud Watford is hosting a one day free exhibition at St Mary’s Church on the theme of Watford as ‘a place without prejudice’.

Proud Watford chair Ian Port said: “We wanted everyone to have an opportunity to express their own understanding of our mission, helping Watford evolve as a place without prejudice, because ‘a place without prejudice’ means different things to different people and most of us encounter prejudice against us, no matter what our circumstances. Proud Watford’s view is the more we come together as people, the more chance there is to understand each other and overcome prejudice of all kinds.”

The artworks are all specially created for the exhibition and include paintings, collages, digital art and photographs. The exhibition will include nearly two dozen pieces created by Proud Watford supporters including members of DRUM, a local charity providing community-based and low-cost day activities for adults with physical and/or sensory disabilities, together with members of the LGBTQIA+ community and allies.

Marcus Jones, churchwarden of St Mary’s, said: “We are pleased to be hosting this exhibition and share the concern of Proud Watford to make our town a place where all are welcome and where we love our neighbour as ourselves.”

Watford resident Catherine Baldwin is one of the artists exhibiting.

She said: “My entry aims to offer a creative expression of the ethos that lies at the heart of Proud Watford, an organisation made up of like-minded people who welcome everyone with open arms, and one that I’m delighted to be a part of. What a fabulous way to celebrate being a Proud Watford ally!”
