Two friends have opened the first 100 per cent plant-based eatery in Berkhamsted.
Dojo Asian Fusion, located on Lower Kings Road, opened last month, and serves up a full menu of completely plant-based Asian-style dishes.
Ran by mates Scott Cowham, 25, and Matt Mills, 20, the eatery takes a creative plant-based approach to classic dishes including pad Thai, duck pancakes, chicken satay and chicken katsu curry.
Speaking to BerkhamstedNews, the duo who also live together said they decided to go into business together after the pandemic hit.
Matt said: “I’ve had a passion for cooking for a very long time as it ran through the family, my mum was a baker and my dad and brother are in the industry.
“I went to college and studied professional cookery and went on to work in Guy Ritchie’s pub in London which was a really good experience.”
Scott added: “We were both doing our own things before COVID, then we started looking at COVID-proof business ideas and takeaway were thriving where other industries were suffering so I was toying with the idea of opening a takeaway and then Matt moved in with me.
“It just seemed logical having sampled Matt’s food at home which blew my mind.”
The pair have come up with a menu which is, minus a few items, all made in-house using Matt’s recipe including his very own vegan fried egg.
Scott, who has been vegan for five years, also added that alongside the plant-based menu, they are striving to be as sustainable as possible.
He said: “We wanted all our packaging to either be recyclable or compostable, branded packaging and bags are all recyclable
“We can’t promise zero waste as we have waste or sorts, but we are trying to be as sustainable as possible. Even our oil gets collected and recycled into biofuel”
