A Sarratt man has been left feeling let down by the rejection of a planning application for a residential development, despite stating he’s done everything to make it viable.
Long-time resident Jim Cook has been trying to get approval for the conversion of a derelict building on a brownfield site he owns into a small one-bedroom residential dwelling for several years, but has continually run into roadblocks.
The dwelling was initially to provide a place for his son to live somewhere away from his elderly grandfather, who was in the later stages of Alzheimer’s and no longer felt safe living with his son.
But after his father passed away earlier this year, Jim would still like to try and get the project moving forward. “I am £60,000 in this now and I won’t stop. Otherwise, I feel I’ve let my dad down.”
However, Mr Cook has stated that he has been more than accommodating to Three Rivers District Council’s comments. He added that the area would not be visible to other dwellings, that similar developments have been built around the area and that TRDC allegedly ignored the assessment of a heritage officer who found no issues with the plans.
A spokesperson for TRDC said: “The local planning authority’s assessment and decision on the planning application is clearly set out in the Officer Report which is available to view online.
“As part of the application, it was a mandatory requirement for the applicant to submit a Heritage Statement.
“That statement (along with all other submitted information) was considered by the case officer and the conservation officer, and both came to the same overall judgement to recommend that planning permission be refused for this application.”
The application is currently at an appeal stage with the Planning Inspectorate, with the date of the decision currently unknown.
