Applications to send your child to secondary schools in September 2020, opens on Monday (September 2).
Hertfordshire County Council is reminding parents or carers of children in Year 6 to make sure they apply for a place in good time.
The easiest way to apply is to visit www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/admissions and complete the online application form.
Online applications can be amended any time before the closing date and applicants can access their school offer before allocation letters are received and accept their school allocation online.
The closing date for secondary applications is Thursday, October 31 and it is vital that parents make their applications on time.
Terry Douris, cabinet member for education said that last year, 99 per cent of parents applied this way and found the system quick, easy and secure.
He said: “Hertfordshire secondary schools provide an excellent education to thousands of pupils and we understand how important it is for parents and carers to secure their child’s preferred school. This is why we work extremely hard to satisfy parental preference, though we are not always able to completely achieve this.
“Last year 99 per cent of applications were made online and nearly 95 per cent of children in Hertfordshire were allocated one of their ranked secondary or upper schools.
“All secondary schools have open events and I would urge parents to visit local schools before applying, consider carefully what schools they rank and to make realistic preferences.”
Leaflets explaining the secondary transfer process will be distributed to families through their child’s primary, junior or middle school at the beginning of September.
Before making an application, parents and carers are strongly advised to visit schools and attend the information evenings to help them make their preferences.
Leaflets outlining all the secondary and upper school open evenings were distributed in July but the information is also available on the online school directory at hertfordshire.gov.uk/schoolsdirectory.
Parents without internet access can request a paper application form that must be returned direct to the Admissions and Transport team only.
The Under 11s application process (for applications to primary, junior and middle schools) opens on Monday, November 4, 2019 and the closing date is January 15, 2020.
Information is expected to be distributed to parents and carers in early November.
Parents are advised to check hertfordshire.gov.uk/admissions for any updates to the published admission arrangements or timescales and for advice on where to find extra help about applying for places.
